Abstract

A membrane model is used to analyse the dynamic response of the atrio- ventricular valves (mitral and tricuspid) immediately following valve closure. General solutions are first obtained for the forced and damped vibrations of an idealised elastic membrane and then adapted for the valve vibration in response to the systolic atrio- ventricular pressure loading. The resulting valve motion is discussed in relation to the first heart sound.
