Abstract

The metal 2p/sub 3/2/, carbon ls, and oxygen ls binding energies of the gaseous molecules Co/sub 2/(CO)/sub 8/, HCo(CO)/sub 4/, Fe(CO)/sub 5/, H/sub 2/Fe(CO)/sub 4/, Mn/sub 2/(CO)/sub 10/, and HMn(CO)/sub 5/ have been measured by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. From qualitative considerations of the binding energy shifts on going from the transition-metal carbonyls to the corresponding carbonyl hydrides, it is concluded that the hydrogen atoms in the carbonyl hydrides are negatively charged. By application of the potential model, approximate hydrogen atom charges of -0.3, -0.8, and -0.75 are calculated for H/sub 2/Fe(CO)/sub 4/, HMn(CO)/sub 5/, and HCo(CO)/sub 4/, respectively. 2 tables.
