Abstract

Excitation functions, angular distributions and absolute cross sections have been measured. An excitation function for the ground state tritons from the 9Be( 3He, t) 9B reaction has been measured at a lab angle of 20° over the energy range from 3.5 to 9.0 MeV and angular distributions have been measured at 1 MeV intervals between 5.0 and 9.0 MeV. The elastic scattering excitation function has been measured at a lab angle of 45° over the energy range from 4.0 to 9.0 MeV and angular distributions have been taken at 6.0 and 8.0 MeV. The ground states of 9Be and 9B are isobaric analogues and as such have the same quantum numbers, differing only in the orientation of isospin in isospin space. The ( 3He,t) angular distributions have therefore been compared with the predictions of an optical model which includes an isospin dependent potential proportional to ( t · T), where t and T are the isospins of the projectile and target, respectively. Appropriate distorted potentials for the incomingand outgoing channels have been determined from fits to the elastics scattering distributions.
