Abstract

Statistical model calculations have been made to determine 23Mg+n reaction rates in the temperature range 0.5−5 × 10 9 oK and to investigate their competition with the β + decay of 23Mg during carbon burning in stars. To check the validity of the statistical model in this mass region, the 23Na(p, n) 23Mg reaction cross section was measured from E c.m. = 4.85−10.5 MeV, with particular attention to the astrophysically relevant energy range E c.m. = 4.85−5.9 MeV. As a further test of the model, the cross sections for other 23Na+p reaction channels were measured over the narrower energy interval and compared with the model.
