Abstract

It has been shown that, with proper care, passive samplers may be expected to collect wet deposition with essentially 100% efficiency. The same cannot be said of these samplers' dry deposition collection efficiency (CE) since many aspects of the surrogate surface bucket differ from those of the surrounding natural surface. An attempt to estimate CE(SO/sub 4/) was made during the Dry Deposition Intercomparison Experiment. Results of this study indicate that the bulk sampler's CE(SO/sub 4/) lies between about 10% and 100%. This indicates that SO/sub 4/ dry loading contributions measured in acid rain network passive samplers may, at times, be as much as 1000% lower than natural surface dry deposition. 10 references, 1 figure, 2 tables.
