Abstract

Spatial discretizations are studied for a series of fluid displacement problems. These problems vary in complexity from the miscible and immiscible displacement problems to a multiple-contact-miscible displacement of a gas condensate by nitrogen. Several numerical techniques are used in order to determine their usefulness and limitations. The simulation of physical dispersion effects is found to be important for certain problems, since methods which neglect dispersion either fail to converge or they do not converge to the solution of physical interest. Numerical difficulties are encountered in simulating physical dispersion effects for problems with phase changes. Areas where additional research is needed are outlined.
