Abstract

The spins and decay modes of eight of the first 11 excited states of 32S have been investigated by the use of the particle-gamma angular correlation method of Litherland and Ferguson. The 32S(p, p') 32S reaction was used at bombarding energies between 7.5 and 10.7 MeV. Protons were detected in an annular counter at 180° to the beam and gamma rays at angles between 20° and 90° to the beam. Decay modes are given for all states studied. Spin assignments were made to the levels at 4.29(2), 4.70(1), 5.41(3), 5.55(2), 5.80(1) and 6.23 MeV (2), and that of the 4.46 MeV level was limited to 2, 3 or 4.
