Abstract

This study discusses the work carried out on measurement of solar energy parameters and the heating requirement of a double plastic cover greenhouse during the growing season. Monthly averages of hourly ambient temperature, sunshine hours, and total solar radiation followed the same pattern. During the day there was more reflected light above a green-pepper canopy than within. The ratios of the monthly average of solar energy to the total energy (solar energy and fuel energy) input to the tunnel greenhouse varied between 37 and 52% with the minimum ratio occurring in January. A good agreement between solar energy and ambient temperature, and solar radiation and the ambient temperatures was noticed between fuel energy and ambient temperature and the solar radiation. The energy cost of heating fuel was estimated to be U.S.$3.75/m 2 for a double-cover tunnel greenhouse.
