Abstract

Aim: To measure and compare the LDH level in saliva of oral cancer patients and the normal individuals. Objective: The main objective is to analyse the salivary lactate dehydragenase (LDH) level in the oral cancer patient and the normal individuals. Background: Oral cancer is the third most common form of malignancies in India. In many cases it develops at the site of premalignant lesion. In cancer there is a transformation of normal tissue to premalignant lesions further to oral cancer, which causes alteration in glycolytic pathway and hence LDH levels. LDH is found in almost all cells of the body. The level of LDH vary according to metabolic requirement increase LDH level is the marker of cellular necrosis. So in oral cancer, salivary LDH level is increased and it is a good biochemical marker of the disease. Materials and method: Clinically diagnosed 20 oral cancer patients are selected and compared with 20 normal control. After obtaining the consent of the patient, unstimulated whole saliva was collected and processed for LDH measurement in spectrophotometric method. Reason: Oral cancer is one of the common cancers and oral patients have different level of LDH. So, estimating the salivary LDH in oral cancer patients may help in better diagnosis and hence the treatment.
