Abstract

Primary malignant lymphoma of the small intestine is one of rare disease of the small bowel. It represents 37.0% of all malignant tumours of the small intestine. It is still difficult to make the preoperative diagnosis, and 65% of them were first diagnosed at emergency operation for some complications. Twenty cases of the disease experienced at the hospital in a recent 31-year period were clinicopathologically studied in order to elucidate prognostic factors and appropriate therapies. Thier mean age was 49.9 years old, and male-to-female ratio was 3:1. Excision of the tumour was performed in all cases. Their cumulative 5-year survival rate was 51.7%, and all death cases but one died within 13 months after the operation. The factors that influenced the prognosis were tumour diameter of more than 10cm, histological deapth of si, Naqvi staging 3 and 4, and the curability B and C of the operation. But histological metastases to the lymph nodes, macroscopic features, and histological classification were not important prognostic factors. Primary therapeutic strategy is the operative resection in sake of Curability A, and chemotherapy should be added to all cases. Further intensive follow up during two years after the operation is very important.
