Abstract

An analysis of 502 odontogenic cysts comprising 259 radicular cysts, 141 dentigerous cysts, 98 residual cysts and 4 primordial cysts is presented. Keratinisation of the cyst epithelium was found in 11 per cent. of the entire material, in 14 per cent. of the dentigerous cysts, 33 per cent. of the residual cysts, 50 per cent. of the primordial cysts and never in the radicular cyst group. A significant difference in location of keratinised and non-keratinised residual and dentigerous cysts was found. On the basis of this study and of other investigations it would appear that keratocysts of the jaws are non-inflammatory in origin. Epithelial residues from the dental lamina constitute the probable source of the epithelium, although this conclusion has not been documented completely as yet. However, the assumption that the dental lamina has the potential of forming keratinised epithelium appears to be supported by the present investigation.
