Abstract

A total of 379 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, 595 E.N.T. controls and 1044 Hospital controls among Chinese patients who are residents of Singapore were interviewed between March, 1966 and August, 1968 in respect of their country of birth, province of birth in China and specific community (dialect group). The number of China-born cases was significantly lower than expected when compared with the Chinese population in Singapore but not when compared with the controls, and the possibility that this may have arisen fortuitously is not excluded. While nasopharyngeal carcinoma is common in all sections of the immigrant and local-born Chinese population of Singapore, the relative risk is significantly lower for those derived from the Province of Fukien and significantly higher for those belonging to the Cantonese dialect group. A higher risk for the Hainanese is observed among the China-born but not the local-born.
