Abstract

Sonic velocity impactor stages have been investigated by the numerical solution of Euler equations and the equation of motion of the particles using the FEM-FCT (Finite Element Method - Flux Corrected Transport) method. Calculated solutions compare well with published results. The effects of the pressure ratio, χ = P ∞/ P 0 and the jet to plate distance S/ D are examined. It is found that at certain jet to plate distances the impinging jet is unstable and the effects of this instability are examined.
