Abstract

AbstractThis study examined the role of the internal design department and its collaboration with construction manager and the client during the design process by the UK construction company Laing O'Rourke (LOR). The results are as follows: (1) In the early stages of design, personnel from architectural design in LOR works flexibly with the client to set the design conditions. The structural/facilities designers and construction teams are involved in the design process to clarify the cost and construction schedule; (2) The design team coordinates with the client, architect, and construction team on issues that arise during the design process; (3) The initial design work is carried out collaboratively free of charge; (4) The construction team signs Pre‐Construction Service Agreement (PCSA) with the client and carries out preconstruction contract; (5) The design specifications are gradually clarified and the construction contract is concluded in stages; (6) The client and construction company works together with shared objectives and shared necessary information.
