Abstract

An investigation is made of the atomic capture of K−-mesons by the atoms of nuclear emulsion. The initial population of the mesic capture states is estimated; from this population distribution a detailed cascade calculation is performed. The energy spectrum of the Auger electrons ejected during the de-excitation of the mesic atom is given and the intensities of certain X-ray lines are shown to be dependent on the properties of the nuclear surface. The probabilities of nuclear capture of the meson from the various mesic states are found, and the probability that a A0-hyperon, produced as a result of this nuclear capture, is trapped within the nucleus is determined. Similar calculations that have been made for ∑−-hyperic atoms are also included.
