Abstract

Four insect repellents, deet, ethyl hexanediol, DMP (dimethyl phthalate), and Indalone® (butyl 3,4-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-4-oxo2 H -pyran-6-carboxylate), were studied for their effect on the behavior of Aedes aegypti (L.). The behavioral parameters studied were: takeoff, flying activity, and oriented approach to the repellent-coated Human palm, warm-moist surface, and an inert surface. Three different distances between the mosquitoes and the target studied were sued. Deet affected the mostquitoes most in takeoff, flying and approach, and Ind alone® the least. Ethyl haxanediol was the most irritating of the four, yet not the best. Considering the effectiveness over distance and overall efficiency, the 4 repellents could be rated as follows: deet > ethyl hexanediot > DMP > Ind alone. The interaction of attractant And repellent molecules in affecting mosquito behavior is discussed.
