Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is the third most common cause for morbidity and mortality, following cardiovascular diseases and malignancies. Diabetic complications occur before it has been diagnosed. Thus, early diagnosis of type 2 Diabetes mellitus is essential to reduce diabetes-related morbidity and mortality. The screening will be able to identify these high-risk individuals. Aim: 1. To determine the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose in rst-degree relatives with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. 2. To know or detect the complications at the diagnosis of prediabetes and Diabetes mellitus. Materials And Methods: AHospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Medicine, Santhiram medical college, and the general hospital for six months. Atotal 50 number of rst degree relatives of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients admitted to the hospital during this period were taken into the study. Results: The rst degree relative of diabetic parents were more in the age group of 31-50 years of age, contributing to 68% of the total study population, impaired fasting glucose was found in 6 subjects (12 %), 4 were males, and 2 were females, and four subjects (7%) were diagnosed to have newly detected diabetes mellitus and one male patient has abnormal PPBS. Conclusion: Screening of rst-degree relatives of people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients help early detection of all prediabetics and diabetics. Screening for IFG was a cost-effective tool in rst degree relatives.
