The luminosity function and space distribution of galaxies. Kirshner, R. P. ; Oemler, A., Jr. ; Schechter, P. L. Abstract Redshifts, magnitudes, and colors for a complete sample of galaxies in eight fields scattered in the north and south galactic caps are used, together with data for the brighter sample of galaxies in the Second Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies (1976), in order to determine the general luminosity function for galaxies. The results are compared with those obtained for galaxies in rich clusters, and the galaxy density is determined as a function of galactocentric distance in the two polar caps. The galaxy counts and the distribution of rich clusters are employed to derive additional information about the radial density variation. A spatial covariance function is obtained which provides strong evidence for clustering of galaxies well beyond the 'break' in the covariance function of Soneira and Peebles (1978).
