Abstract

A Study of ESL Program with a Special Reference to the English Education of University Isabel (Chosun Univesity) This study identifies the effect of the current ESL program, aiming at development of University English education based on studies on the ESL program developed by Chosun university. First, this study investigated whether the ESL program improved the communication ability of students. As a result, it was found that students themselves know they have improved their English skills through the program. In our environment of EFL, students were provided opportunities to improve the four skills in an integrated basis for more than 15 hours a week. The program invited native English teachers to help students relieve their fear of them for basic communication. Second, ESL programs were provided for students from 1st grade in pre-medicine, Dept. of Global Law and Division of Undeclared Majors, and CU Leader scholarship students for Semester 1, 2009 and two simulated TOEIC tests were given to them. Considering changes in scores between Semester 1 and Semester 2, a mean of their TOEIC scores in Semester 2 was higher than that of Semester 1, which indicates that the program contributed to enhancing students' communicative skills. Thus, the ESL program of Chosun University is very significant for present university English education in which communication-oriented education has not been achieved. However, this study did not present directions for long-term English education and curriculum for each level and it is expected that such limitations will be overcome through further studies.
