Abstract

A model for the proerythroblast compartment of the rat erythroid system has been presented, based upon the assumption that cells divide at all points in the compartment. On the basis of this model an equation has been formulated, relating the 55Fe labelling index with time after injection of 55Fe. The experimental results have been analysed with the help of this equation, and give the following estimates for the parameters defining the cell kinetics of the compartment: a fractional inflow ( f N ) of 0.011/hr; a fractional outflow ( F N ) of 0.08/hr; a compartment transit time of 28.5 hr; a mean of 2.9 divisions as a cell passes through the compartment; and a mean cell cycle time of 9.8 hr. In addition it has been shown that cells make roughly seven divisions during their lives as recognised erythroid precursors.
