Abstract

SummaryThe effect of dilating the cervix by vibration was studied in a group of 50 patients in labour randomly allocated to treatment or control groups. There was no difference in the overall induction to delivery interval. The average rate of cervical dilatation was increased in the patients who had cervical vibration, but not significantly so. In 13 out of 25 patients who had cervical vibration the cervix became sufficiently dilated to make ventouse delivery possible. The procedure was found to be safe and acceptable to patients.
