Abstract

In the Czech Republic there are several anaerobic digestion plants processing farmyard manure. The farmyard manure is subjected to anaerobic processes in airproof digesters for approximately 30 days. Immediately after loading it is self-heated up to a temperature of 55–60°C (aerobic stage), whereafter the digester is closed to promote the anaerobic process. The basic equipment for farmyard manure fermentation is a modified reinforced manure pit. The fermentation unit itself consists of a hopper and a bell. The hoppers are filled with farmyard manure using special containers, and after the aerobic stage is completed, an insulated metal bell is used to close the unit. A digester consists of 6 to 8 fermentation units. The annual average biogas production is 0.9 m 3 per animal unit per day. The seasonal output of biogas was found in summer to be 1.10 m 3/animal unit/day, in the transitional period 0.75 m 3, and in winter 0.55 m 3. In summer the average methane content was 56.96%, it decreased to 49.39% and 50.85% in the transitional period and in winter, respectively.
