Abstract

This paper focuses on the study of the application of the battery energy storage system (BESS) installation instead of the distribution line reinforcement for a short-term planning. The economical tool such as Net Present Value (NPV) will be employed for cost comparison of both alternatives. The 22kV distribution network of the Provincial Electric Authority, Thailand was used as a case study. From the study, it reveals that the problems of overloaded line occurring in the short-time period per day (<;6hr) can be reduced by the BESS installation. It is also shown that this approach is applied to postpone the system reinforcement in a short-term planning (3 years) but not applicable for the long-term planning (over 5 years).
