Abstract

This comparative study was carried out using a sample of United Kingdom patent applications claiming organic chemical structures per se.The main characteristics of the CAS and C2C systems and the scope of the study are described. Some typical individual results and a summary of the complete results are provided.Brief comments on the equipment used and the problems of Markush structures, and conclusions from the study, are included. Overall it was found that the two systems provide important, and in some respects complementary, alternative routes for information retrieval in this area. Use of CAS substantially increases the number and range of documents to be cited at the preliminary examination stage, and has greater precision than for C2C.Finally, Appendix 3 presents a detailed tabulation of the complete results and corresponding analysis of this data.
