Abstract

In the initial stages of the reaction EuBr 3(s) → EuBr 2(s) + 1 2 Br 22(g) induced in anhydrous europium(III) bromide heated above 460 K under vacuum, a non-stoichiometric europium(III) phase is produced. Samples of EuBr x ( x > 2.8) were examined using Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electrical conductivity techniques and the results, which were similar, were compared with those of an earlier study on the corresponding chloride system. The results for both systems are consistent with the properties of inhomogeneous mixed-valence compounds in which the electron hopping is thermally activated and is most plausibly seen as a process in which a 4f electron is promoted into the 5d6s conduction band for a characteristic time of the order of 10 −6 s at 78 K.
