Abstract

It is predicted that the guide vane of the cross-flow turbine produces large losses due to the fluid drag, and that, at the low flow rate when the guide vane is shut, trubine efficiency drops rapidly because the flow in the upstream passage becomes a divergent flow with a separation region. Therefore, the authors have designed and developed a new type of nozzle with an exit valve, which can slide along the nozzle exit arc without a vane inside the nozzle. In this report, the flow rate and the output power control characteristics of this nozzle and the flow conditions at the nozzle exit were experimentally investigated. Furthermore, these results were compared with those of the nozzle with the guide vane. It was found that this new type of nozzle can control the flow rate and the output power continuously, and that a turbine with this nozzle represets higher efficiency than that with the guide vane over a wide range of flow rates.
