Abstract
The retail industry undergoes rapid changes in India, the retail sector accounts for 10% of the country’s GDP and around 15% of the employment. There is an increased demand for quality retail space from a varied segment of large – format retailers and brands, which include food and apparel chains, consumer durables and multiplex operators. India ranked No.1 in A.T.Kerney’s Global Retail Development Index in both for the consumer market’s potential and attractiveness. This paper focuses on Indian retail industry in current scenario, organized retailing in India, reasons for growth of retail sector, challenges before the Indian retail sector, and factors needed to promote the Indian retail industry and future scenario of Indian retailing.
