Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to serve as an introduction to the use of P and S wave data for the determination of focal mechanisms for those who are not familiar with the mechanics of the process. In particular the determination and plotting of the S-wave polarization angle is discussed in detail. An appendix gives some useful transformations for describing P, SV, and SH amplitudes on the focal sphere in terras of the orientation of the X, Y axes or the P, T axes, or in terms of the strike, dip and slip angles.
