Abstract

A comprehensive weight control program was implemented to assist 34 female participants in achieving healthy body weight. The program, which was based on the LEARN (life style, exercise, attitudes, relationships, and nutrition) manual, resulted in significant improvements in self-efficacy and exercise frequency. There were, however, minimal weight losses, high dropout rates, and a great unwillingness to return for follow-up. Increased self-efficacy and increased exercise frequency represent only an initial step in a long process of life-style change. Programs that provide continuous support systems are essential for the success of this process.
