Abstract

(Ti, Zr)-X(X = Si or Cu) ternary metallic glasses were prepared by alloying Si or Cu to (Ti, Zr) = Ti -32.44at%Zr neutron zero scattering alloy. We observed the atomic structures of the (Ti, Zr)-X ternary and Ti-X and Zr-X binary metallic glasses by neutron scattering. The atomic arrangement of (Ti, Zr)-X ternary metallic glass is far different from those of the Ti-X and Zr-X binary metallic glasses. In the ternary metallic glass the chemical frustration induced by the difference of affinities among constituent atoms give rise to the chemical atomic rearrangement accompanied by local concentration fluctuation.
