Abstract

The structures of five cation distortion isomers of the five-coordinate [Cu(bpy) 2Cl] + cation range from trigonal bipyramidal to square pyramidal distorted trigonal bipyramidal, restricted by the bite of the 2,2′-bipyridyl ligands. The structures may be related by a structural profile involving a linear combination of the ν 7 and ν 8 modes of vibration of a trigonal bipyramidal CuN 2N 2'Cl chromophore in C 2V symmetry.
