Abstract
Different spin states characterize the two Fe atoms in the unique asymmetric dinuclear complex 1, as confirmed by Mossbauer spectroscopy. The complex is a first generation structural model for [Fe]-only hydrogenases; it incorporates both a sulfur-rich environment and coordinated carbon monoxide ligands, as observed in [NiFe]-hydrogenases. The IR vibrations of the carbonyl ligands in 1 compare well with those of the [Fe]-only hydrogenases.
