Abstract
Current approaches to language assessment can be categorized as involving the use of norm-referenced tests or informal descriptive assessment. The two approaches are evaluated, and found to have complementary strengths and weaknesses. A proposed strategy advocates a combination of descriptive and formal assessment measures. This approach involves the following components: {a) parent-clinician interview, (b) parent-child observations, (c) clinician-directed formal and nonformal assessment procedures, and (d) parent-clinician interpretation. An elaborated sample of language assessment is provided.
