Abstract

This paper proposes a new operation mode for solid state transformer (SST) with three-stage architecture and dual active bridge (DAB) converter as intermediary stage. The main objective of this paper is to increase the SST efficiency at low load operation and make the SST convenient for Brazilian rural areas applications. In this context, the limits of the proposed operation mode are delimited and a comparative efficiency analysis between the proposed and standard operations modes is presented. As the proposed method manipulates the SST input power factor, the paper presents a study about the insertion of the SST in the distribution grid. The results show that the proposed operation method also can reduce the power losses on the feeder. Finally, the paper evaluate a replacement around 4% of the feeder demand from electromagnetic transformers to SST and the simulation results shows a reduction of 5% in the feeder losses during a determinate time interval as well as a daily average reduction around 3.75%.
