Abstract

This paper presents a Stratal-OT approach to the overapplication of Coda Neutralization and Consonant Cluster Simplification across compound boundaries in Korean. It is proposed that the problems involved with the overapplication be resolved by recognizing two serial but separate levels in Korean phonology. The dominance of Align(Stem, σ) over Onset plays a crucial role in the overall discussion and this ranking holds at both levels. The overapplication effect arises from the difference in the access to morphological structure between the two levels.
