A Story of Female Research Engineers in Malaysia: Chipping Away at Long-Entrenched Gender Stereotypes [WIE From Around the World

Abstract

This article highlights women in predominantly male vocations and how the challenges they face impact them and the professions they are bravely transforming. Our focus group study deals with 13 newly graduated women engineers working at a research institute in Malaysia, who viewed their roles from the perspective of workplace virtues, office philosophy, and job environment. As women immersed in a traditional culture, they attempt to comprehend the roles they have been consigned to play, roles that can conflict with their ambitions. Though they might never march on the streets for a feminist cause, they are nonetheless feminists because every day, with dogged persistence, they confront the barriers women face and change them, little by little.
