Abstract

This paper deals with a stochastic simulation approach for the development of seismic hazard maps suitable for earthquake engineering purposes. A synthetic earthquake catalogue is simulated, where each earthquake is represented by a source spectrum. On the basis of the source spectra, simulated accelerograms are derived at predefined grid points, and then transferred into the desired earthquake-induced effects. Computerised maps of quantities like peak ground acceleration, linear elastic and nonlinear inelastic structural response are readily displayed using a geographic information system. These maps can for instance be based on a prescribed average recurrence interval or probability of exceedance in a given time period. The presented approach is applied to the South Iceland Seismic Zone.
