Abstract

A model is proposed which predicts that the relationship between size and abundance of organisms is logarithmic when certain conditions are met, the most important among these being that the organisms are limited by a single resource. The model is presented in both a deterministic and stochastic form. Examples from experimental and field situations are given, and the model is discussed as to its general relevance and applicability.
