Abstract

A stochastic analysis is presented for the evaluation of the performance of a clay liner. The transport of a single solute through a clay liner under a landfill or lagoon is modelled by a one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation. The governing equation is solved by an available semianalytical method. The uncertainties associated with various model input parameters are studied using Monte Carlo simulation. The risk of aquifer contamination is evaluated in terms of probability of exceedance of the pollutant concentration over specified critical levels.
