Abstract

Steroid constituents of garden peas (Pisum sativum L.) were isolated using thin-layer chromatography, and their steroidal nature was confirmed by precipitation as the digitonide. The fraction having the same Rf as cholesterol and β-sitosterol promoted abundant vegetative growth and prolific sporulation of Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands. The steroids cholesterol, ergosterol, β-sitosterol, and stigmasterol stimulated growth and sporulation. Cholic acid, calciferol, mevalonic acid, and desoxycholic acid stimulated to a limited extent or had no effect.
