Abstract

The brief political career of Peter Sawyer in the late 1980s and early 1990s illustrates the political ferment that was a feature of Queensland politics in that period. Sawyer became a catalyst for advancing a range of extremist views from many far-right political groups and individuals. Sawyer's apocalyptic and conspiratorial world view found a significant following among many people from groups as diverse as Pentecostal Christians through New Age followers to the ordinary voters concerned with the difficult economic conditions of that period. Sawyer created a loose network of followers, many of whom would go on to support Pauline Hanson and other far-right groups such as Lyndon LaRouche's Citizens Electoral Councils. Sawyer's political career was brief but, illustrates the potential of far-right organisations in periods of uncertainty and economic distress.
