Abstract

Before the retired space shuttle Endeavour could become a popular new attraction at the California Science Center, in Los Angeles, the former earth orbiter had to complete one of its most dramatic journeys—a twisting, turning 12 mi odyssey through city streets from Los Angeles International Airport to the museum. Standing in the shuttle’s way were myriad obstructions, including streetlight poles, trees, building corners, curbs, concrete median strips, and underground pipes, that had to be either circumvented or removed.
