Abstract

To complete the photophysical study on the series of di-thienyl-ketone and thienyl-phenyl-ketone isomers, the absorption and emission properties of three compounds (3-thienyl-phenyl ketone, 2,3′-di-thienyl ketone and 3,3′-di-thienyl ketone) were investigated. Phosphorescence was observed in both, fluid solutions and frozen glasses. Intersystem crossing yields were determined by triplet sensitization measurements; effective spin–orbit coupling was found. Triplet–triplet absorption spectra, triplet lifetimes and reactivity in oxygen-quenching and self-quenching processes were investigated by nanosecond laser-flash photolysis. The lowest electronic transitions were assigned. The S 1 state is of n,π * character for all three molecules, while the lowest triplet is of π,π * configuration for the 2,3′-di-thienyl ketone and of n,π * configuration for the other two molecules.
