Abstract

The detection of power system faults plays an important role in the correct operation of digital protection relays. Most fault detection methods use variations of electrical quantities as the detection criteria but do not fully utilise this information. This paper presents an adaptive statistical estimator for the basis of detection and classification of power system faults. Results from simulation work on an Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) are presented and the performance of this method is compared to more traditional fault detection algorithms.
