Abstract

The perception of odorous air pollution in the highly industrialized and densely populated Rijnmond area was analysed. It appeared possible to express the spatial distribution of odorous pollution and its perception in mathematical terms, and to construct maps showing iso-lines. Using these maps, the regional authority could establish an air quality standard for odorous pollution. The effect of this standard on land-use planning in the area and abatement strategy are also discussed briefly.
