Abstract
The evolving standards of care in medicine are practice patterns governed by clinical pathways or guidelines. Clinical flowcharts diagram these patterns that influence decision-making, determine treatment, and control medical care resources. Departments, services, and products that are not included in clinical pathways or algorithms will be viewed as nonessential and a burden on contested medical care resources. In order for chaplains to be known as direct patient caregivers, they need to develop spiritual care guidelines and incorporate them into the clinical guidelines of medical centers and clinics. This paper presents an assessment pathway for spiritual care based on a specific model for spiritual assessment. It includes the author's Spiritual Injury Scale or spiritual distress index.
