Abstract

Highly luminescent and stable nonanuclear complex, H4N+[Tb9(μ4-O2)(μ3-OH)8(μ2-acac)8(t-acac)8]−.2H2O (1) [acac=acetylacetone] has been synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Complex 1 crystalizes in tetragonal system with space group P4/n, and geometry around each Tb3+ metal centre is slightly distorted square-antiprism. The luminescence properties of complex 1 affirm that it shows green emission under UV light excitation, analogous to 5D4→7FJ (J = 1–4) transitions of Tb3+ ion. Complex 1 also exhibits potential application for the selective detection of picric acid among nitro-aromatic explosives through fluorescence quenching mechanism.
