Abstract

In order to achieve robust speech communication under bad channel conditions like underwater acoustic channel, an error control transmission scheme based on UEP is presented. The transmission scheme combines both source coding and channel coding to strengthen the protection of the data transferred through the channel. The method uses block code as the extra protection for source coding, and uses 2/3 Turbo codes as the channel code, which leads to the same channel rate in the scheme where only the 1/2 Turbo code was used. The results of the simulation show that the scheme which combines block code and Turbo code could achieve a better performance in bit error rate. And as the block code protects the error sensitive bits of the source, it can synthesize a clearer and more understandable speech than the common scheme which just uses the Turbo code.
