Margon, B. ; Nelson, J. ; Chanan, G. ; Thorstensen, J. R. ; Bowyer, S. Abstract Results are reported for spectrophotometric and photometric observations of 11 candidate stars appearing within or just outside the Ariel 5 error box of the transient slow X-ray source A0535+26. The observations were performed over the spectral range from 3600 to 7000 A with 8-A resolution down to a limiting V magnitude of roughly 23. No star observed is found to show any trace of emission lines except for the bright Be star HDE 245770; this star is taken as the best candidate for the optical counterpart of the X-ray source. A spectral type slightly earlier than B0 is suggested for this star, its (B-V) color excess is estimated as approximately 0.8, and a rather wide range of distances is derived. The companion star's ratio of X-ray to bolometric luminosity is determined to be at least about 0.1 at the time of X-ray maximum. A formalism is outlined for evaluating the observable effects of pulsed X-ray heating of the companion star.
