Abstract A photoelectric spectrum scanner has been used to obtain absolute spectral-energy distributions of the continuum, around the cycle, of the RR Lyrae-type variable X Ari. Slit spectra, with a dispersion of 18 A/mm have also been used to determine the radial-velocity curves and H profiles. It is found that X Ari is reddened by an amount corresponding to 0.19 in B - V. An analysis of the data gives a mean radius of 4.8 Ro and a mean absolute visual magnitude (Mv = +0.8+ 0A. Using the perioddensity law along with effective temperatures determined from the scans and H profiles, it is found that for (Mv = +0.8 the mass is 0.4 Mo. The various "observed" values of log g are compatible with that predicted by the period-density law.
